We live in a box. Life for us is packaged in a box. We wake up in a boxy house or a boxy apartment and eat breakfast out of a box. We drive our boxy cars to our boxy offices and sit all day in front of our boxy monitors. We then drive our boxy vehicles or ride in our boxy train cars holding our boxy handheld devices, back to our boxy homes where we spend the rest of the day in front of boxy television sets. The box tells us who we are: It tell us what to think and believe. It tells us what we need and who we should fear and hate. We are born free, but soon after we're taught to forget what we know and what we innately understand. We're taught that we belong in a box. We're ordained to the box of religion, a Christian box or a Muslim box or a Jewish box. And we are recruited to the box of a nation. We're taught that we're American or Indonesian or French or Chinese. We're taught that in some way we are different from each other and separate from the world. We're taught to take pride in insubstantial things, such as borders, ideals, and beliefs. |
