| The Fig Tree Accepts What Cannot Be Changed |
|
the fig tree accepts what cannot be changed Most of us have heard the prayer, "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." There is a great truth in this prayer, yet we spend exorbitant time and energy trying to change what cannot be changed, oblivious to the things we can change and incapable of understanding the difference. Why is that? We live in a culture that endorses this behavior, a culture that establishes celebrities as role models, supermodels as a cue for how we should look, authorities as arbiters of what is right and wrong, television therapists as healers of all our ills, institutionalized religions as deciders of what is moral and what is not, and powerful corporations as dictators of what our needs are. They are all encouraging us to be mango trees, so to speak. Don't buy into what others tell you you should be. Why live someone else's life? Being you works better because you, in your natural state, are aligned with the laws of nature. |
