| We Are The Fig Tree That Wants To Be A Mango Tree |
|
We as humans are the most endowed and burdened of all creatures: being ourselves, what is so simple and natural to all living things on earth has become extremely complicated for us. Separating ourselves from the natural world, we've lost our sense of true identity. Not recognizing our true selves, we are often torn between what we are and what we desire to be. Thus we live our lives in great dismay. We are the fig tree that wants to be a mango tree. The fig tree may not realize it wants to be a mango tree, but it knows that as a fig tree it is not happy. It has decided that something is wrong, and by becoming something else, the problem will be resolved. The fig tree decides that it needs to change. It sees that the mango tree seems happy producing mangos. So the fig tree concludes that to be happy, it must become a mango tree. The fig tree seeks sage advice from gurus and teachers, experts in mango trees. It studies and learns everything there is to know about mango trees. It does its best to adorn itself like a mango tree. It even tries to speak the language of the mango trees. The fig tree makes a sincere effort to become a mango tree. It may be able to fool its surroundings, and in some cases, it may even fool itself. Yet when it is time to bear fruit, the fig tree will have figs hanging from its branches not mangos. At the end of the day, and at the end of life, the fig tree will always be a fig tree. |
